A Word from Psalm 119

What’s got your attention as you start this new day? Are you thinking about the tasks you need to complete and the people you need to connect with? Are you stressing over the latest news or searching out the newest thing on social media? Are you worrying about the challenges you face or anticipating an upcoming celebration?

Let’s face it: there are so many things that clamor for our attention. But as I read today’s word from Psalm 119, I can’t help but wonder how I might be different—and how my life might be different—if my attention was more fully focused on knowing and following the word of God.

Now, if you know anything about Psalm 119, you know that it’s entirely focused on the word of God…so much so that it almost becomes monotonous! And yet, for me at least, it can sometimes cut through the clutter and remind me of the heart I’d like to have…

Teach me, Lord, the way of your decrees,

that I may follow it to the end.

Give me understanding, so that I may keep your law

and obey it with all my heart.

Direct me in the path of your commands,

     for there I find delight…

How I long for your precepts!

In your righteousness preserve my life. (119:33-35, 40)

Of course, I think it’s worth remembering that all the decrees, laws, and demands of God’s word find their ultimate expression in God’s Living Word—His Son, Jesus Christ! And therefore, yearning for God’s Word isn’t about attending to a list of does and don’ts. It’s about seeking the Savior, who not only teaches us God’s way, but who gives us the grace that makes our obedience possible.

So, what would it look like for you to pay attention to him today? May he occupy our thoughts, and may we find our delight in knowing and following him. Amen.
