Bible Study

At Calvary, we believe that one of the most important paths to long-term spiritual growth is the regular study of God’s Word. Such study has an even greater impact when it takes place in the context of a small group, where other believers provide encouragement, challenge, and the opportunity to transform concepts into action. That’s why small group Bible study stands at the center of our efforts to lead people into a deeper relationship with Christ and with each other.

While many different study options are available through our Midweek Ministry, the core of our Bible study can still be found in our weekly Sunday School. Every Sunday morning at 9:45, classes for everyone in the family offer fun, fellowship and journey into the teachings of scripture. Classes for children and youth are organized by age and school grade. But adults have an array of men’s, women’s and coed classes to choose from. Check the list below for a brief description of each class.

Children's Classes
2 and 3 Year Old (Room 213)

In the 2 and 3 year old class, we cherish the opportunity to help children begin the journey of learning about God. Naturally, we make sure they have fun in the process by providing time for play and snacks. But that is all preparation for our weekly time with the stories of God's Word. We read verses from the Bible and talk about the lesson. And then, a copy of the lesson is sent home with each child, so the parents can read scripture with them. Our literature comes from Lifeway. But our joy comes from sharing with children the never-ending love of God. (Teachers: Vicki Fields, Stephanie Hawks, and Janet McPherson)

Pre-K and K (Room 217)

Our Sunday School class is specially designed for children ages 4 years through Kindergarten. In a loving and cheerful environment, little hearts learn about Jesus and discover the truth of God’s Word in ways they can understand. Each week, we explore exciting Bible stories using The Gospel Project curriculum that helps children see how much God loves them. Through hands-on Bible story crafts, they creatively respond to what they’ve learned and take home reminders of God’s promises. Our class includes fun center time where children can play, build friendships, and practice sharing and kindness. We also enjoy snack time together, creating opportunities for conversation, laughter, and community. Most importantly, our classroom is a place where children feel safe, valued, and encouraged as they grow in their faith and begin building a strong foundation in Jesus.

Grades 1 and 2 (Room 212)

Our 1st and 2nd grade Sunday School class is a joyful and faith-filled place where children grow in their love for Jesus! Each week, we explore a Christ-centered Bible story through The Gospel Project curriculum, helping students see how every story points to God’s plan of redemption. We pray together, play together, have lots of fun, and learn what it means to be a true follower of Jesus in our everyday lives.  (Teachers: Erika and Tracy Goings)

Grades 3-5 (Room 219)

Our Children’s Sunday School class for grades 3-5 utilizes The Gospel Project Kids curriculum by Lifeway to guide students through the entire story of Scripture, showing how every lesson points to Jesus Christ. Through engaging activities such as crafts, games, questions and answers, children learn biblical truths in a fun and meaningful way. We place a strong emphasis on developing relationships, encouraging daily prayer, and fostering a love for the reading and understanding of God’s Word. Our goal is to help kids grow in their love for Jesus, the Bible and others. (Teachers - Doug O'Dell and Denise Cain)

Coed Classes
College and Career:

We are a group of mid 20's to mid 30-somethings who enjoy each other's company while we dive into scripture together. No theologians here, just a group of people who share what they know and are eager to learn more. We consist of individuals as well as married couples, including several parents to young children. Our studies go from deep dives into books of the Bible to breaking down episodes of The Chosen and everywhere in between. This is an easy group to fit into and we are always welcome to new people. (Teacher: Choppy Cawley)

Young Adults (Room 202 B):

The Young Adult class is comprised of men and women who range in age from early 20’s through 40 plus. They use RightNow Media teaching resources which incorporate various subjects and authors. They emphasize a strong sense of family in both their study and their fellowship. Everyone is welcomed with open arms. (Teachers: Steve Simandle, David McPeak, Gray Shelton)

God’s Hands Class (Room 117):

The class is energetic, discussion-based, and has a heart for service. (Teachers: Benny Lisk, Mary McCormick, Kim Morrison, Jeff Stowe)

(Teachers: Carol Lowe, David Stone)

Narrow Gate Class (Room 121):

The Narrow Gate class is for those who wish to gain a closer relationship with Jesus and a deeper understanding of God’s Word through in-depth, topical Bible studies. Each study is completed over an average time span of about 6 weeks and is publicized to the church so that others may temporarily join for a topic of interest. While many participants choose to “drop in” for a study here and there, there are others who are permanent members of the class. Unique perspectives are offered by participants of all ages and varied backgrounds. The only requirement is a sincere desire to grow in Christ! (Teachers: Becky Critz, Scott McHone)
