A Word from Daniel 7

Did you watch any of the ceremonies that took place when King Charles replaced his mother, Queen Elizabeth, as the monarch of England? If you did, you know that it was the kind of event for which the words “pomp and circumstance” were probably intended. Elaborate ceremonies. Regal garments. Triumphant music and crowds of onlookers. There’s something impressive about the ascension of a new king or queen. And if that’s true of an earthly monarch, certainly it’s even more true of a heavenly one!

I mention this because today is “Ascension Day”—a time to remember when Jesus was taken up to heaven after his resurrection and took his place next to God the Father, so that he could reign over creation through the power of his Spirit. And in today’s word from Daniel 7, the prophet was given a vision of that occasion, which he described like this:

In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence. He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all nations and peoples of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.” (7:13-14)

Of course, as powerful as a vision like that is, more amazing still is the awareness that Jesus is reigning as King right now! Even if we struggle to see it at times, all glory, honor, and power belong to him. And he is “shepherding” you, and me, and all creation toward that day when God’s plan will be complete.

So, the question I want to ask is, “How will you enthrone Jesus in your heart today? And how will his reign change the way that you trust, and serve, and declare his greatness?”

The Lord has ascended with shouts of joy! (Ps. 47:5) May all His people give Him praise. Amen.
