A Word from Matthew 1

Because it’s almost Easter and not Christmas, I’d imagine that it’s been a while since you’ve thought about Joseph, the earthly Father of Jesus. And that’s understandable, since Joseph’s only real appearance in the Bible is one interaction with an angel of the Lord. And after that, he becomes little more than a prop in the manger scene—standing beside Mary as she welcomes the baby Jesus.

And you know, that’s unfortunate! Because it took a lot of faith and obedience over the long haul for Jesus to get to the manger…and then to Nazareth…and then to the adult life that he lived as our Savior and Lord. And maybe that’s why, in some Christian churches, today is the Feast Day of Saint Joseph—a day to meditate a little on the importance of what Joseph did.

You know the story. Engaged to Mary, who got pregnant out of wedlock, Joseph could have shamed her and subjected her to punishment. But while planning to end their relationship quietly, an angel appeared to him in a dream and told him to go ahead and get married to Mary. “Because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit,” the angel said. “And she’ll give birth to a son, and you’re to give him the name Jesus, because he’ll save his people from their sins.” (1:20-21)

And here’s what makes Joseph such a worthy example to remember. When he woke up from his dream, “he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him.” (1:24) Despite the potential cost to his reputation, and despite the long-term commitment that would take his life who-knows-where, Joseph obeyed. And I wonder if that might inspire us to obey, even when doing so comes with challenging consequences.

Of course, “That’s unique!” we might object. “That’s a Bible story about Jesus coming into the world.” But then again, aren’t we called to bring Jesus into the world? Isn’t Jesus still “made flesh” in our words, and actions, and response to God’s commands.

So, may we be obedient today! And may Jesus continue to come among us because of it. Amen.
