A Word from Psalm 130

What do you do—and where do you turn—when your heart is breaking? When the foundations of your life are being shaken? When you’re suddenly confronted by challenges that you never dreamed you’d face? How do you hold on, when so many things in life simply refuse to make sense?

Well, in today’s word from Psalm 130, this is what one of God’s poets did. He called out to God, being honest about the condition of his heart and asking God to meet him in his pain.

“Out of the depths I cry to you, Lord,” he said;

     “Lord, hear my voice.

Let your ears be attentive

     to my cry for mercy.

If you, Lord, kept a record of sins,

     Lord, who could stand?

But with you there is forgiveness,

     so that we can, with reverence, serve you.

I wait for the Lord, my whole being waits,

     and in His word I put my hope.

Israel, put your hope in the Lord,

     for with the Lord is unfailing love

     and with Him is full redemption.” (130:1-5, 7)

Obviously, I hope you’re not “in the depths” this morning. But we live in a world where far too many are. And so, let me ask you to be mindful today—of those who are hurting, in need, and hoping desperately that God’s unfailing love will hold onto them. Would you pray for them, so that—together—we can trust in God’s full redemption? Amen.
