A Word from Matthew 16

Do you ever wonder why it is that followers of Jesus so often have a problem keeping “the main thing” the main thing? For example, in today’s word from Matthew 16, Jesus makes it clear what his ministry is all about. He explains to his disciples “that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.” (16:21)

But Peter can’t imagine that following the Lord would require sacrifice instead of power and glory. And so, he rebukes Jesus and says, “Never, Lord! This will never happen to you! (16:22)

And even today, we seem to get caught up in arguing about who’s got the right view of the End Times, or what our worship style should be, or whether it’s okay for women to use their gifts in ministry in any way that God has called them. And as a result, I can’t help but think that Jesus would say to us the same thing he said to Peter: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.” (16:24-25)

So today, let’s remember: “The main thing” is Jesus! And following him means embracing his other-focused, humbly-serving, and sacrificially-loving way—and not seeking new opportunities to get our way or to gain power over others. So, may our glory be in the cross and in the Savior who made it a source of life. Amen.
