A Word from Genesis 22
How do you think you’d respond if you were convinced that our Holy and Loving God was calling you to do something ungodly?
I ask that question because today’s word comes from Genesis 22, in which we find the story of Abraham being called to sacrifice his son Isaac. Of course, in the end, Abraham wasn’t asked to go through with it. And not only that, but even the emotional trauma of this command only serves to highlight the deep love of the Father and the Son, who ultimately did go through with such a sacrifice to save us from our sin and brokenness.
But still, there is at the heart of this story a calling that seems so ungodly we can only bow before the mystery of God’s purpose.
But in that mystery, there’s one exchange that I cling to. As Abraham and Isaac walked toward the place of sacrifice, Isaac said, “Father, the fire and the wood are here. But where’s the lamb for the burnt offering?” And Abraham replied, “God himself will provide the lamb.” (22:7-8)
You see, I’d like to think that part of what makes Abraham’s obedience noteworthy is that even when it seemed like God was calling him to do something ungodly, he trusted—that in the end—God wasn’t like that! And that in the end, God would demonstrate His character and would provide what was needed for both obedience and godliness to be honored.
And that gives me hope. In a world where too many people seem to feel like circumstances demand ungodliness, I still believe that if we trust in God, He will provide—and will make it possible for us to act in a way that’s as faithful and loving as He is.
So, may God provide for you today. And may faith enable you to be godly in a sometimes ungodly world. Amen.
