A Word from Philippians 4

If you stop and think about where your mind is focused these days, what things would you say capture your attention?

I wouldn’t be surprised if at least some of your mental energy is spent keeping up with all the bad news that gets thrust upon us constantly. And then, of course, there’s all the trivia and distraction that circulates on social media. Whether you realize it or not, advertisers probably have a bigger hold on your heart and mind than you realize. And let’s not forget all the responsibilities and “to do” lists that demand our consideration at home, at work, and even at church.

In other words, it doesn’t take much for all kinds of things to capture our attention. And as a result, it’s no wonder that we’re so often anxious, preoccupied, and sometimes overwhelmed. But thankfully, it doesn’t have to be that way. And in today’s word from Philippians 4, the Apostle Paul offers a prescription.

“Summing it all up, friends,” he says, “I’d say you’ll do best by filling your minds and meditating on things that are true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, and gracious—the best, not the worst; the beautiful, not the ugly; things to praise, not things to curse. Put into practice what you learned from me, what you heard and saw and realized. Do that, and God, who makes everything work together, will work you into his most excellent harmonies.” (4:8-9, The Message)

So today, why not set aside a few minutes to be intentional about focusing on something good? Step outside and see the gift of refreshing rain. Turn off your devices and read some scripture. Have a snack and give thanks for God’s provision. Talk to a friend—maybe even a Divine Friend—and celebrate the wonder of being loved. And through it all, receive the peace that God is so eager to give. Amen.
