A Word from John 15

Do you remember what it was like when you were kid and it came time to “choose sides” for something? It might’ve been a ball game, or spelling contest, or school project of some kind. But whatever it was, you felt the anxiety of wondering, “Will anyone choose me?”

Of course, as we age, we don’t often “choose sides” in such an obvious way. And yet, don’t we still feel the fear of wondering if we’ll be chosen? Accepted by a certain group of people? Selected for the job? Chosen as someone who’s worthy of love?

Well, in today’s word from John 15, Jesus offers some good news for all of us anxious candidates who are trying to figure out where and if we belong. Comforting his followers in the hours leading up to his death, Jesus says, “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you. This is my command: Love each other.” (15:16-17)

So just think. As the Lord of the universe was getting ready to give his life to save us all, he was thinking about you! And he was explaining that he was willing to go the cross, because…you’re worth it! He’s decided to choose you, and love you, and appoint or commission you, so that your life can glorify him by bearing the “loving fruit of the kingdom” that demonstrates our obedience to his commands and that endures forever!

So, knowing that you’re chosen—and that Jesus’ Father is prepared to give you what need to bear the fruit for which you’ve been chosen—what are you going to ask today in Jesus’ name?

May the Spirit of the Lord who’s chosen us be the same Spirit who guides us to ask, and to live, and to love well. Amen.
